Born and raised in Seoul, Dr. Kyong Hee Chee graduated from a Canadian high school in Toronto, and returned to Korea to earn a B.F.A from Seoul National University and an M.B.A. from Sogang University. She then pursued graduate studies in the United States and obtained her M.S. and Ph.D. in sociology at  Iowa State University. Before joining the faculty of Texas State University - San Marcos, she was an assistant professor of sociology at Georgia Southern University. In 2005, she was selected for inclusion in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.

At Texas State, Dr. Chee is teaching The Sociology of Aging, Life Course Sociology, and The Family at the undergraduate level, and Seminar on the Family at the graduate level. She also has been working on the growth of the university’s gerontology program (a minor in Social Gerontology and a track in Gerontology). She likes to encourage and help students to present their research papers at conferences and enjoys keeping in touch with her former students.

Dr. Chee’s main research interests are in the sociology of aging and the life course. More specifically, she has been interested in studying patterns of community participation among older adults.  One of her articles, “Community Mobilization in the Context of Population Aging” (Chee 2006), was awarded the Sociological Spectrum Article of the Year designation from the Mid-South Sociological Association. In 2008, she received the Civic Engagement in an Older America Project Senior Scholar Award from The Gerontological Society of America for her conference paper entitled “Predicting Retirees’ Interest and Participation in Their Communities.” Her current research focus is on Asian American elders.
