I discovered sociology late in my undergraduate career. Immediately after graduation with a BA in Psychology, I entered the master’s program in the sociology department at University of Houston. In 1990, with my MA in hand, I entered the Ph.D. program at UC Santa Barbara. When I graduated (six years later), I moved back to Texas.

I joined the sociology department at Texas State University in 1996. Two highlights of my career in this department are when I received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching in (2002) and when I got tenure in 2004.

My research focuses on racism in well-meaning white people, where racism supposedly does not exist. The paperback edition of Silent Racism: How Well-Meaning White People Perpetuate the Racial Divide, (Paradigm Publishers) is available as of March 2007.  For more information about Silent Racism, visit www.SilentRacism.com.  The book encourages people to replace the question, “Am I racist?” to “How am I racist?” The book is available at Amazon. Currently I am working on a study called Race Awareness in Well-Meaning White People.

My primary teaching interests are sociological theory and social psychology. I am also faculty advisor for Alpha Kappa Delta, the honor society for sociologists and sociology students.
