I began my career at Texas State (then SWT) in 1995 as a graduate student in the sociology department. In graduate school my focus was gender and folklore. I completed my graduate thesis on beauty pageants in small towns in Texas. Upon graduation I took a job teaching sociology at ITT Technical Institute. In addition, I taught at ACC, both in sociology and communication studies, as well as at Texas Culinary Academy (chefs need to learn to communicate). I was brought back to the sociology department as an internship coordinator and lecturer in 2001.

As an internship coordinator, it is my job to assist with all BSAS majors. We will help students not only in finding an internship, and during the internship, but we also assist, in any way possible, those who need help long before they are ready to complete an internship.  If you are considering a major in Applied Sociology, feel free to stop by and talk to us.  In addition, one of the most rewarding aspects of my job is being able to keep in contact with alumni.  Several of our alumni even work in a capacity where they can have interns of their own.  They make some of the best mentors, as they know what our interns are going through.

In addition to being an internship coordinator for the sociology department, I also teach Drugs and Society each semester.  In this course, we learn about the impact of both illicit drugs and drugs that are legally available in our society.

Recently I developed an online introduction to sociology course that allowed students to be anywhere while completing the course.  This class was hugely successful and hopefully will be offered again soon.  Check the schedule.

Personally, I enjoy spending time with my husband, daughter, family, friends, and my beloved Jack Russell mix, Hunter.  She is a dog only her mother can love…

I also enjoy carrying on a tradition my parents started back when I was a small child—cooking in chili cook-offs.   We usually only get to go to a few a year, but for the past few years we have qualified for the World Chili Championship in Terlingua, Tx, which is by far the most sociological field trip I have ever taken.
