The number of older persons is growing rapidly, and there is increasing demand for professionals who will serve the needs of the aging population either directly or indirectly. A minor in Social Gerontology is designed to expose students to a variety of courses that examine aging processes and aging issues from multiple perspectives. Thus, earning a Social Gerontology minor will give students an edge in pursuing further study or a career in gerontology. The minor may particularly appeal to students in health professions, social work, family and consumer science, recreational administration, health education, occupational therapy, exercise and sports science, communication disorders, as well as majors in social sciences including sociology and psychology.
The minor requires 18 semester hours including 9 hours from the following core courses: SOCI 1310 or 3300, SOCI 3383, SOWK 4320, and PSY 3313. The remaining 9 hours should be selected from SOCI 3308, 3327, 3337, 3383, 3384; SOWK 4320; PSY 2315, 3313, 3361; and REC 1320.
