F.A.C.T.
Family Assistance Crisis Team
San Antonio Police Department

F.A.C.T.

For my internship I am working with F.A.C.T., Family Assistance Crisis Team, which is part of the Victim's Advocacy section of the San Antonio Police Department. F.A.C.T. was established in 1991 as a community project to help victims of domestic violence. As a F.A.C.T volunteer my duties include volunteering at the Bexar County Family Justice Center and the various police substations around San Antonio. It is our responsibility to provide domestice violence victims with the resources they may need to bounce back from their situation.

My Experience:

Even though I have only been at this internship for a month and a half and have learned a lot about victim services and a lot about myself. Working at the substations I am able to have one on one time with victims so that I may give them the resources they need to become a survivor. Then, working at the Family Justice Center I am able to see those same victims come in and receive the help they need including filing for a Protective Order, legal aid and counseling. I have learned that I find great joy in knowing that I could give someone the proper resources to get help. I have also learned that you cannot force someone to get help if they do not want it; they must find the courage and desire to get help if that is what they truly want.

This internship has and will continue to help me explore my future career options. So far I am enjoying this avenue and we will see how things are in December!
