My name is Efrain Davila, Jr. I chose to do my internship
at Travis County, Justice of the Peace, Precinct 3. I have been working under the
supervision of Judge Susan Steeg. While completing my internship, my main
responsibility has been to perform research for a pilot program that will deal
with the juvenile truancy cases the judge receives in her court. The new
program will allow for a juvenile case manager to assist the justice court in
attaining compliance with court orders requiring school attendance. The goal of
the juvenile case manager program is to get students back into school, so they
could further their education.
Working at Travis County JP3 has been a great experience for
me. I have learned and experienced a lot. I learned a lot about the workings of
a justice court and some problems they may face, how to work and communicate in
a professional setting, and how be organized. During my internship I have been
fortunate to meet and work with great people that are very passionate about
what they do.
Since I have been a performing social research at my
internship, I have been able to use the knowledge and tools I have learned throughout
my college career. For example, I have been able to apply things I have learned
from my research methods classes, stats class, and social stratification class.
I feel that the internship and the internship program has been a great experience
and have better prepared me to enter the professional world after I graduate.
