My name is Joel Denney and I completed Sociology Internship Program working as a research assistant for Dr. Bob Price, a faculty member in the Department of Sociology at Texas State University. My work included an extensive literature review for a planned journal article on the American culture wars and the relationship between religious and democratic values. For this research we analyzed data from the World Values Survey in an attempt to discern popular sentiments about a number of relevant issues. I was also given the opportunity to attend an Association of Applied and Clinical Sociology conference in San Antonio, where Dr. Price and I presented the preliminary findings of our research. This program has provided me with an insight into the possibilities of an academic career and has strengthened my resolve to continue with my education in sociology. The experience of participating in an actual research project has spurred a personal interest in conducting research of my own someday. All together, the internship experience has been a positive and useful one, especially because of my personal academic goals.
