James Horton's Intern Webpage
My
Name is James Horton and I have been an intern at three different
non-profit organizations in San Marcos: The San Marcos River
Foundation, San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance, and Sustainable San Marcos.
The San Marcos River Foundation is a group that strives to
protect the water rights of the San Marcos River. They host river
cleanups and remove any invasive plant life that is introduced to the
river. They also make sure there are evasive manuevers in case a
dam breaks and floods down the river. The San Marcos Greenbelt
Alliance protects the natural greenspace in San Marcos. They also
build trails through these areas and host fundraisers to try and
purchase more greenspace. Sustainable San Marcos is about
educating people on recycling and lowering your carbon footprint.
A sub-division of Sustainable is Edible San Marcos which teaches
people how to grow their own food and even how to use rain water
harvesting for all of your water needs.
These groups have
taught me how to run a grassroots organization successfully. My
background in sociology has let me see many things in effect, most of
which are functionalism. I have seen how pople pull toghether
using cohesion to form their own mechanical solidarity. I have
enjoyed my time with these organizations and look forward to helping
them in the future.
