Vincent Jacot's Internship Fall 2009
Office of Tourism: Jerez de la Frontera

My name is Vincent Jacot and I am a Applied Sociology senior at Texas
State University. I decided to use my internship to not only gain work
experience, but to also learn a foreign language, immerse myself in
another culture, and travel the world. The option that gave me the best
opportunity to fulfil all of my aformentioned goals was to intern with
the Office of Tourism: Jerez de la Frontera in conjunction with Caramba
Language School. This opportunity combined my interests of government
and tourism.
As an office intern, it is my job to create itineraries for visitors
who
request the services of the Office of Tourism. I will often escort
these tourists and give tours of Jerez. I also create itineraries for
school field trips, diplomats and other V.I.Ps that want to tour Jerez.
As an intern at the Office of Tourism in Jerez I have witnessed and
participated in a local governmental buracracy with oversight from a
federal office. This includes helping my supervisor with budgeting,
organization and ideas on how to improve the local tourist economy in
Jerez. The main purpose of my internship is to conduct research
regarding the impact of the Caramba Language School on the local
tourism economy. I conduct the research by interviewing my fellow
classmates regarding how much money and time they spend in Jerez, which
local businesses they frequent, and their perceptions of Jerez.
I feel this experience has not only given me a once in a lifetime
oppurtunity, but the skills I have gained through this internship, my
proficency in Spanish and my Applied Sociology degree will make me an
asset to many future employers. My internship at the Office of Tourism:
Jerez de la Frontera was my ideal internship experience.
