About
Me...
My name is Jerry Keith Humphries Jr., and I am a senior at
Texas State University - San Marcos. I will graduate in December of
2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Sociology, and a minor
in Mass Communication. I hope to use both my
major and minor to improve the society in which we live in. While
admittedly a lofty goal, it is not one that is out of reach. I hope to
touch many peoples lives with a strong dedication to their individual
needs as well as others. It is because of others
that I have been able to improve myself. I hope to return this favor by
educating others with the same dedication and goals I have set for
myself.
My Internship...
I chose to complete
my internship with the Strengthening
Relationships
program through the Center for Children and Families at Texas State
University - San Marcos. The program is administered by Michelle Toews,
assistant professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences,
and Karen Brown, professor in the School of Social
Work,
working under the auspices of the Center for Children and Families. In
order to do so, it was my responsibility to complete both an Advocate
training session at the Hays-Caldwell Women's Center and the
Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative's course in the
Protection of Human Research Subjects. The goal of the project is to
assist adolescent parents in building and maintaining healthy
relationships by developing their personal and relationship skills. The
program trained undergraduate and graduate interns, such as myself,
from a variety of disciplines at Texas State
in a modified version of the nationally recognized Connections:
Relationships and Marriage
curriculum. I have implemented this program to adolescent parents,
their partners and their families enrolled in the Pregnancy, Education
and Parenting (PEP) programs. The sessions cover topics such as
learning aspects of healthy relationships, building awareness of
interpersonal relationships, creating realistic expectations about
relationships, improving communication skills, and developing conflict
resolution strategies. My internship has
continued to be a rewarding experience, and I have made many wonderful
and meaningful connections.
