Welcome to my internship page!  My name is Kristen Schoenert and I am a senior at Texas State University in San Marcos.  In August of 2007, I will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Sociology.  Part of the Applied Sociology degree plan is a 300 hour internship program.  For my internship, I have been fortunate enough to be working for the Travis County Juvenile Justice Center in Austin, TX.

This summer I am doing my internship at the Travis County Juvenile Justice Center. More specifically I am working in the Residential Department of the Travis County Leadership Academy in the “Girl’s Visions” unit. The Leadership Academy offers a multitude of programs designed to meet the needs of post-adjudicated youth. The Visions program in particular is an intensely structured short-term program, designed to interrupt a juvenile’s rapidly escalating non-compliance to probation rules. My role as an intern in this program includes many duties and responsibilities. I also participate in daily scheduled events and activities. Some important tasks I have mastered include monitoring daily routines and activities, observing therapy sessions, processing with the youth, offering problem solving suggestions and counseling, tutoring, and most importantly offering myself as a mentor to the youth. I have really learned a lot about this population. The experience has been so rewarding and being involved in this internship will help with my future career goals.
