Sociology Internship

My name is Kyle Wilsterman. I am currently a student at Texas State University in San Marcos. My major is Applied Sociology and as a requirement for graduation  I had to participate in an internship program. I was very lucky and actually got the chance to work at two wonderful sites in Wimberley, Texas. I worked at Blue Hole , a swimming hole, and for the Wimverley Community Center.

Brief Overview

Blue Hole is a swimming Hole located in the Village of Wimberley. It has been a Texas treasure for nearly 30 years. This was the first year the city ran it on their own.  Don Ferguson is the manager  and it is open all summer long.

The Wimberley Community Center was established by WSCAI (Wimberley Senior Citizens Association Inc.) for the purpose of having a place the whole community can gather. The center has been open now for just over 2 years and is teh perfect place for a wedding reception, graduation party, or meeting. They also have a senior's lounge and a gallery for art.

The Best of Both Worlds

My intership provided me with a unique experience, I was working in two completely different enviroments. My job at Blue Hole was more of a service industry. When customers came to swim I collected admission, handled all questrions and complaints, and perfomred book-keepiing duites. On the other hand my job at the Community Center was more of a technical job where I got to hone my office skills as opposed to my people skills.  I feel that in the business world there are two main  area's that your job will focus on either communication skills/personal service or technical skills, my internship granted me the opportunity to learn both.

Lessons Learned

There are two life lessons that I took away from this experience, one from each site. First from Blue Hole I learned the value of trust and independence on the job. We had little direct supervision as employee's at Blue Hole, our manager was also the city administrator. I was expected to problem solve and perform my job up to standard without anyone watching over me. I beleive that by  trusting me to do my job and by the way I excelled, I have been given confidence that will be taken into future business situations. At the Commuity Center I learned how to be a team player, and that while some jobs seem meaningless and trivial, without someone doing these jobs the goal of the company/organization as a whole will never be met.
