Greater San Marcos Youth Council
Children's Emergency Shelter
Brittany Dilworth's Internship
I
chose to do my internship at the Greater San Marcos Youth Council's
Children's Emergeny Shelter. GSMYC is a non-profit organization located
in San Marcos, Tx off of IH-35. The mission of GSMYC is; "to provide
area youth and their families with easily accessible resources which
are necessary for family preservation and will enable them to live
together amicably through confidant parenting, conflict and crsis
resolution, effective communication, utilization of community resources
along with the option of benefiting from the emergency shelter, where
youth are temporarily provided with a safe, structured and supportive
living enviroment".
My work is in the Emergency Shelter, which strives to help each child
realize that they are lovable and that there are grown-ups that can be
trusted. On a day to day basis my job consists of answering phones,
taking placements, doing discharges, and making sure the children have
a loving and trusting enviroment for them to spend their time in.
Since many of the children arrive with just the clothes on their
back, we must find ways to help them recieve the necessities of life.
This is where my special project comes into play. I am responsible for
organizing and seperating all of the donations recieved from people in
the community and local businesses. Then I distribute them to the
children staying at the shelter.
I am learning a great deal about what it is like to work in a
shelter enviroment, as well as the many other careers that are linked
to the shelter. I would definitely recommend this intership to anyone
who is dedicated to changing childrens lives for the better!
