Heather Denman
Strengthening Relationships
My name is Heather Denman and I am currently a 2009 intern for the Strenthening Relationships program.
Interning at the Swinney House with the Strengthening Relationships has
been interesting and helpful to me. I get to use my qualitative and
quantitative skills at my internship daily and use SPSS frequently
during the quantitative portion of the internship. I am very satisfied
that my internship is relevant to my studies and i get to directly
apply what i have learned to my internship. I was given the opportunity
to code transcripts from various focus groups as well as work with a
partner to come to a general consensus. I applied what I learned from
Dr. Harris in my qualitiative methods class. The goal of the
Strengthening Relationships program is to improve the relationships
between adolescent mothers, fathers, or couples. The program helps the
adolescent parents obtain knowledge about conflict relolution
strategies, characteristics of a healthy relationships, financial
planning, and family budgeting.
My contribution as an intern is to analyze and enter data into SPSS
that has already been obtained from prior interns. The Strengthening
Relationships program conducts research which will contribute to a
grant loan ssociated with Texas State. The over all goal of the program
is to promote long-lasting, healthy marriages.
I am happy to be interning at the Swinney House for many reasons. I get
to directly apply what i have learned throughout my collegeic career
while putting my skills and energy into a program that is positive for
our society. This makes interning at the Swinney House even more
commendable and worthy. I am proud to be apart of the success of the
program and research.
