The Department of Sociology offers many scholarships and awards each year in honor of past graduates and faculty. Each scholarship is unique and has its own unique set of criteria; not all of the Department of Sociology’s Scholarships have an application form. Please refer to each scholarship’s description for their specific criteria.
In memory of her son, Geoff Wood, Ms Marilee Wood has funded scholarships to be awarded by the Sociology Department at Texas State University. There will be a minimum of two but not more than five scholarships awarded. There will be at least one undergraduate and one graduate scholarship. The minimum amount of the scholarships will be $500.00. Scholarship, as demonstrated by grades and letters of recommendation, is the primary selection criterion. Demonstrated financial need, scholarly potential and/or probable social influence are additional criteria.
Charlotte McCord was a loved and respected member of the Sociology faculty. She left us in the summer of 2005 after a protracted and heroic battle with breast cancer. She generously donated her retirement funds to create this scholarship for Non-Traditional students. Ms. McCord had once been a Non-Traditional student in the Sociology Department at Texas State (then Southwest Texas State). This scholarship will be given to a Non-Traditional student who demonstrates academic success and enthusiasm for the field of Sociology, two qualities Ms. McCord possessed and valued in her students.
The Clarence Schultz Sociology Scholarship was created to honor the long and exemplary teaching career of Distinguished Professor Emeritus Clarence C. Schultz and in appreciation of his numerous other contributions to Texas State University - San Marcos and to the Department of Sociology. The Clarence Schultz Sociology Scholarship is to be awarded each fall semester until such time as the earnings from the endowment warrant an award for the spring semester. The decision to extend the award to the spring semester is to be made by the department chair based on the recommendation of the departmental personnel committee. The recipient will receive the funds from the Office of Financial Aid in the form of payment of tuition and fees. In the event that the award is greater than the recipients total tuition and fees bill for that semester the recipient will receive the remainder of the award in the form of a check issued by the Office of Financial Aid.
To be considered applicants, the student must be an undergraduate sociology major at Texas State University - San Marcos and be enrolled full-time (12 or more hours) during the semester(s) the award is received. Applicants must have completed 45 credit hours of study with at least 30 hours of credit earned at Texas State University - San Marcos. Applicants must have an overall GPA of 3.0+ and a GPA of 3.25+ in sociology at the time of application. If the award is distributed over two semesters, GPA averages must be maintained through the first semester on this Scholarship to continue eligibility for the award for the second semester. The award is for one year only, that is, the recipient may not reapply for the scholarship in subsequent years.
When time permits, the announcement of the award will be made at the School of Liberal Arts Awards Ceremony and at the Alpha Kappa Delta banquet.
